FYI, higher-resolution Nipkow discs aren't *quite* that constrained by geometry. We can separate the viewing area into multiple light chambers, then use a disc that presents one hole at a time *per chamber* as it spins. It is quite possible to reduce both the disc diameter required and the revolutions per second required of it by a factor of ten in this way - though that implies a hundred light sources in a ten-by-ten array.

The dead mans switch in old locomotives was like a brake pedal in a car. Just as long as the engineer had his foot on the pedal, the locomotive functioned normally. If he were to take his foot off, the engine would go into idle and “full service” or “emergency” brakes would be applied (full service is where all the breaking power the train is capable of is applied, I.E. full service. Also, emergency and full service are the same thing, with the difference being that emergency gets the brake cylinders up to pressure much faster than full service would.) Many old crews hated the pedal, and would often put a brick in its place so they wouldn’t have to put their foot on it. In modern locomotives, the dead mans switch is called “the alerter”. It’s a yellow button on the control board that must be pressed within a 10 second time slot. Moving the throttle, reverser, or the breaks will also shut it off. However, if it is not pressed within the 10 second timeout the train will go into emergency and the dispatching center will be notified.

In the early 1960's, my father was given an experimental horn by Rambler Motors as a test of their product line developments. The horn would actually yell "RAMBLER". Originally it sounded ok, but after a few weeks it started to sound pretty crappy, partly because he couldn't leave the horn button alone and it seemed like once someone heard it, everyone had to hear it. Eventually, I think the dealer who gave it to him made him give it back. I think word just got around that some ass hat in town kept blowing that "god damn horn".

I mean, it wasn't pointless for the recycling portion because if they got it from a grocery store, 9/10 times that person is going back to that store at some point anyway, so they still could've worked, but streaming eventually took over and now look at us, basically paying for cable again. IMO If streaming services are going to be a thing, they need to make a better competitive price since there are so many streaming services now. If someone wanted all of them, they'll be basically paying for the same amount as cable, which is why streaming started in the first place and I don't subscribe to that notion. Ease of access means more cash flow in the long run. But maybe I'm talking out of my ass 🤷🏼‍♂️

Today's version would contain a microprocessor, optical scanner read the bread UPC tag, two motors )one for each slot), and require an internet connection (with account sign-in) to access a master bread / toasting database. It will take 40 seconds to scan the tag and set the doneness, but you won't have to press a lever down. If you have the toast app on your smartphone, it will notify you when it's done, but won't let you collect it for 60 seconds to avoid burnt finger lawsuits.

I agree, the regular flashy bulbs suck. Twinkling lights are much more pleasant. And they are more rare from my experience -- we have LED lights now, all white, but they're a warmer white. As for what you call the strands -- I just call them mini string lights. Well, originally I did... Now they're just string lights, as opposed to the larger incandescent sets that everyone had 20 years ago. But a long time ago, the big ones were just "string lights" and the little ones like you were wearing were just the mini set.

The two AC units take a while to warm the room. It rarely gets below 5oC in Melbourne.
